Open letter to the LBA – VC transmits worrying survey results on referrals
Frankfurt am Main, September 19, 2025: The Cockpit Association has submitted the results of a member survey on medical referrals in an open letter to the President of the Federal Aviation Office (LBA). 343 pilots participated in the survey. The feedback paints a worrying picture: long processing times, a lack of transparency, and significant personal and financial burdens for those affected.
The long processing times are particularly critical: “More than two-thirds of those affected waited longer than three months for a decision, and almost 10 percent even waited more than a year. These are not isolated cases, but a structurally relevant phenomenon,” says Andreas Pinheiro, president of the Cockpit Association. “For a professional group whose existence directly depends on medical care, such delays are simply unacceptable.”
Furthermore, publications in recent days have suggested that there may be reservations about the pilot profession within the LBA. “We view this development with great concern, as it places additional strain on the already fragile relationship of trust,” adds Vice President Katharina Dieseldorff.
The Cockpit Association emphasizes that the LBA bears a high level of responsibility for flight safety. This makes transparent, fair, and efficient procedures all the more important. At the same time, the VC makes it clear that it is committed to continuing the dialogue initiated with the LBA and constructively supporting it in order to achieve joint improvements.
